A week or so ago, I found a link to a Pokemon drinking game. The first thing I did when I found it was tell a bunch of my friends about it and suggested we should play. However, as time went on, I realized that we’d need a bigger playing area than a standard 8x11 piece of paper.
So, I bought a Bristol board and some Crayola markers and started recreating the game on a bigger surface. I started by dividing the board into 64 squares of the same sized, in order not to manipulate the original. Once I was satisfied, I outlined the main path in black and red marker, with a silver one used to separate the regular spaces. I cleared out a section in the middle so that the rules would stay on the board. All of this is in the second picture.
Next, I copied the locations of the gyms, Gary, Silph Co., the Pokemon Tower, and all of the type drinks. Those type drinks correspond to the starter you choose at the beginning of the game. If you a player lands on a square with a blue triangle in the corner, the player would take a drink if they chose Squirtle. This is the same for Charmander (orange), Bulbasaur (green), and Pikachu (yellow).
The third step was the most time consuming. It involved writing all of the drinking stipulations into the correct boxes and colouring the special squares. The Pokemon Tower and Silph Co. were separate due to their related nature and drinking stipulations, while Victory Road is all pink since you have to stop at each square. It took a while, but a fine tip marker was a great tool for this. I suppose you could type everything and print it off, but I didn’t think of that until right now.
The last step was the Pokemon themselves. I found pictures of the Pokemon randomly online thanks to Google. For the gym leaders and things where multiple Pokemon were involved, I just used the same squares from the PokeMeme version. Then, it was Grade 1 all over again with the cutting and the pasting. As you can see in the last picture, I think the final product turned out really well.
Anyways, I’m off to go play this now. I’ll give another post later (probably tomorrow) about how the game played and possibly anythings that could use some adjustments. Until then, gotta catch ‘em all!
